The new term is nearly upon us! Yes, the summer is coming to a close and it won’t be long before you’ll be returning to uni for another academic year. Getting off to a good start is always a smart call when it comes to your university degree. So, we’ve put together some expert advice on how to best prepare for the new term.

The next chapter of your uni experience started in September. And, as you’ll know from previous years in uni or school, there’s a lot to prepare before classes kick off. From books to new modules to reorganising work timetables, the start of a new uni term can be quite stressful if you’re not prepared.

But, never fear! Follow these 10 steps to start the new term off on the right foot and set yourself up for a successful year in uni.

10 Steps to Start the New Term Strong

Here are 10 things you should add to your to-do list before the new term kicks off.

1. Reflect on the previous term

We all love the recap at the start of a new season of our favourite show. How else would we remember what’s going on?! Well, the same applies to university! Take a moment to look back at your notes and exams from the previous term to refresh your memory after the summer holidays.

Also, think about how things went in general. Consider your successes, challenges, and any lessons learned. Did you manage your time effectively? Were there any study techniques that worked particularly well for you? Reflecting on your experience will help you identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for a stronger new term.

2. Set SMART goals

SMART goals are the secret sauce to achieving success. Make sure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based. For example, instead of saying “I want to do well in my courses,” set a goal like “I will achieve a minimum of 80% in each of my courses by the end of the term.” SMART goals give you direction, clarity, and motivation to stay on track and reach your desired outcomes.

Here’s a real-life example to get you started:

“I will finish reading the book that has been assigned by my teacher within 5 weeks.”

Specific I have a specific book that I need to complete.
Measurable I can measure progress by looking at how many pages I’ve read per day and week.
Attainable Breaking it down, it only comes to about 10 pages per day.
Relevant The book needs to be completed so we can analyze it in class.
Time-based The task will be completed 5 weeks from now on [date].

3. Prioritise tasks and commitments

We all have a lot on our plates, but by prioritising tasks and commitments, you can manage your time more effectively. Make a to-do list and rank items based on their importance and urgency. Focus on the high-priority tasks first, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. By tackling tasks in a structured manner, you’ll feel less stressed and more accomplished.

4. Create a term calendar

Being organised is the key to staying on top of your game in the new term. So, grab a calendar and mark down all the important dates, such as assignment deadlines, exams, and social events. Seeing everything in one place will help you plan your time effectively and avoid any surprises. Plus, you’ll feel a sense of satisfaction when you can confidently say, “I’ve got everything under control.

5. Utilise organisation tools

Let technology lend you a helping hand in staying organised. There are plenty of fantastic tools available, like digital planners, mobile apps, and online platforms. Explore the different options available and find what works best for you. These tools are game-changers when it comes to scheduling tasks, setting reminders, and even collaborating with classmates. With your organisational sidekick by your side, you’ll be ready to conquer the new term with ease.

6. Time blocking

Don’t let time slip away! Time blocking is a simple but effective technique. Allocate specific time slots for different activities in your schedule. For example, dedicate a few hours in the morning for studying, reserve the afternoon for attending classes, and set aside time for relaxation and socialising. By blocking off your time, you’ll have a clear plan and be less likely to procrastinate.

There are numerous time management techniques to help you here. For example, the Pomodoro Technique involves doing 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by 5-minute breaks. Try it out and see if it suits you!

7. Review the course syllabus

The course syllabus is your roadmap to success. Take the time to read the syllabus for the new term, making sure you understand it for each of your courses. It outlines important details like course objectives, assignments, and grading criteria. Knowing what to expect will help you plan your study calendar, stay on top of assignments and deadlines, and prepare for end-of-term exams. So, pop the kettle on, cosy up, and get to know those syllabi!

8. Obtain the required materials

Being prepared means having the right tools at your fingertips. Check the course requirements and ensure you have all the necessary textbooks, online resources, and materials like stationery. Being fully equipped from the start will save you from last-minute panics and you won’t have to worry about any embarrassing moments in class on the first day back.

9. Create a productive study environment

Where you study plays a big role in your focus and productivity. Now is a great time to get your study environment set up ahead of the new term. Find a quiet, well-lit space where you can concentrate without distractions. Arrange your study area with everything you need within reach, like textbooks, notebooks, and stationery. Consider adding personal touches that inspire you, such as motivational quotes, pictures or plants. Remember, a clutter-free and inviting space will make studying a more enjoyable experience and help you start the new term off on the right foot.

10. Apply for part-time student jobs

Before the term kicks off is the perfect time to land yourself a part-time student job. Employers begin the application process for part-time student jobs during the summer so apply now before places are snapped up.
