BBC Software Engineer Graduate Scheme

The UK’s biggest broadcasting system, the BBC, is looking for the new generation of software engineers to help shape the future of broadcasting. If you’re already a software engineer or even if you’re self-taught or you’ve tried your hand at software engineering with online courses, all applications are welcome.

The BBC software engineering graduate scheme is a 2-year program broken down into four 6-month rotations. Locations include London, MediaCityUK in Salford and Glasgow. You can expect to work on BBC products such as BBC iPlayer, BBC News, BBC Sounds and BBC Sport across multiple platforms including TV, Web, Mobile and Voice.

What the BBC Software Engineer Graduate Scheme Entails

The BBC software engineering graduate scheme is looking for the next generation of software engineers to drive innovation in the broadcasting company. You must be able to demonstrate your software engineering experience and be willing to work in a collaborative environment.

You’ll work with a variety of teams across the four rotations aiming to gain as wide a range of experience with the different technologies as possible. As well as working with BBC iPlayer, BBC News, BBC Sounds and BBC Sport, you’ll also work on back end services that support the BBC’s audience facing products, such as Digital Publishing Team, and the Content Management iSite Team.

  • Amazon Web Services (including Lambda, DynamoDB, S3 and EC2)
  • JavaScript – Node.js & React
  • Relational, NoSQL and GraphQL databases
  • HTML & CSS
  • Scala
  • Kotlin & Swift
  • Java & Objective C
  • Python
  • Ruby
  • PHP
  • Haskell

The Software Engineer Graduate Scheme is managed by the award-winning BBC Training Academy. You’ll also have the chance to work with STEM and Women in STEM hackathons and events.

Who is the BBC Software Engineer Graduate Scheme For?

In order to apply for the BBC Software Engineering Graduate Scheme, it doesn’t matter if you’re a self-taught coder or if you’ve done a university degree recently or in the past.

They’re looking for people who:

  • can demonstrate their software engineering experience
  • love working with others, learning from them and helping to teach them
  • are passionate about what they do

You must have the right to work in the UK and be over the age of 18 before the scheme begins.

What the BBC Software Engineering Graduate Scheme Can Offer You

Entry-level salaries start at £24,027 outside of London and £28,756 in London. These salaries increase in the second year and again when you move into your role once the scheme is over. You’ll get world-class training and the chance to work on cutting-edge digital products, all with your MacBook Pro work laptop. Optional rotations are available so you can work in different locations. For any help you need, you’ll have a dedicated mentor and scheme manager. And finally, discounts on gym memberships and health and dental plans are offered. You’ll also receive contributions toward a pension scheme.
