Jobs For Sixth Formers

Are you currently in sixth form and want to earn some extra cash? If you’re tired of saying “No” to weekend plans with your mates because you don’t have the money, why not consider looking for jobs for sixth formers? There are plenty of part-time jobs to help pay for whatever plans you’ve got or holidays you’re saving up for.

Read on to find out more about how you can pocket some extra cash.

First Steps

Your first step is to start working on your CV. This is basically a profile about you that helps employers find the best candidates for a job. If your CV catches their eye, they may invite you for an interview to meet in person.

Therefore, your CV needs to make a great first impression. Don’t worry if you haven’t had any work experience. Concentrate on your skills as opposed to your experience. What makes you a good fit for the role? If you do have any work experience from fifth year, include it. However, remember to focus on what you learnt from the jobs you did, and not simply a list of the different tasks you performed. We have a dedicated page on CV writing tips to help get you started.

You’ll also need to write a personalised cover letter for each job you apply for. It’s a short letter explaining why you are the right person for the advertised job and why you’d like to work for that particular company. A word of advice, don’t write a generic one to send to each employer. Employers know straight away and it will lower your chances of being selected.

When to Apply for Part-Time Jobs for Sixth Formers

We recommend waiting until you have started sixth form before you begin applying for jobs. Your studies should always come first. Once you’ve received your class timetable and settled into the GCSE – A-Level transition, then you can start the job application process. Most employers will ask for a reference so, by waiting until you’ve started sixth form, you’ll also have time to ask a teacher to be your reference.

Part-Time Jobs for Sixth Formers

There are plenty of jobs for sixth-formers out there so it’s important to do your research and see what’s available. That being said, we’ve put together a list of some of the best jobs for sixth formers to help you out a little:

Temporary Work

Many of the more prominent, well-established brands like John Lewis, M&S, Boots, etc. will offer temporary work to cover the ‘Christmas rush’. These are short-term contracts that run from late October through to early January and are typically targeted at students. Shifts will generally fit well around your school schedule with the majority of work at weekends.

Student Brand Ambassador

If you’re a people person and enjoy using social media, a job in Public Relations (PR) might be the perfect fit. You’ll basically promote different brands by posting about them online, generating interest among your friends and followers. Many clubs and students nights will hire brand ambassadors to get the word out about events. They will then give you a commission for every person you get into the club. Remember, you’re entitled to the national minimum wage so don’t be fooled by companies offering you freebies or prizes instead of an actual salary.

Personal Tutor

If you’re good at a certain subject at school and would be confident teaching it, why not consider helping other students out? Many parents will pay big money for tutors to help their children in different school subjects. You’ll need to prove excellent grades in the subject you’re planning to teach, be patient, and enjoy working with younger students. Working as a personal tutor is a great way to boost your CV. It’s also a job that can be done remotely and it pays very well compared to other part-time, minimum wage jobs.

Dog Walker

Dog walking is a dream job for many of us. Basically, you get to hang out with someone’s dog, play with them, take them for a walk, and you get paid to do it all! If you’re considering a job as a dog walker, you must be a responsible and reliable person. Remember, you’re in charge of someone’s pet and they need to trust that you’ll take care of them properly. Dog walking is an ideal student job which you can fit around your studies. It helps keep you active and gives you some extra pocket money for those weekend plans.
