What is a Quantity Surveyor?

University Degree/Graduate Training Scheme

One of the most common ways to start a career in this field is to complete an undergraduate degree in Quantity Surveying (BSc Hons). If you have already completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, such as construction, structural or civil engineering, maths, geography, or economics, it would be possible to complete a postgraduate conversion course. This should be accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). Obtaining this level of qualification will also increase your chances of securing a job in the industry.

Apprenticeship

If you chose to go down the apprenticeship route, a Surveying Technician Advanced Apprenticeship is what you’d be looking for. You would be employed directly by the construction company and receive a salary while you work and study. You would be expected to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, dividing your time between on-the-job training and classroom learning at a college or training provider.

According to the RICS, there is an increasing demand for skilled quantity surveyors to manage this increase in construction projects. This presents an excellent opportunity for graduates to enter the field.

Salary expectations for quantity surveyors vary as you become more experienced. Newly trained quantity surveyors can expect to earn in the region of £25,000 to £35,000. With further training and experience, this can rise to £45,000. While the average UK salary for a chartered surveyor is £60,000.
