Fashion Graduate Jobs

Working in fashion can be challenging and competitive. There are a lot of people who are looking to break into the industry but there are also plenty of fashion graduate jobs. England is one of the best places to be if you are looking to break into retail or the sub-niche of fashion.

Working in the Fashion Industry in the UK

The UK has a thriving fashion industry providing a fast-paced environment and exciting new jobs for recent university graduates. Popular types of business in fashion in the UK include fashion designer houses, fashion brands, and fashion retailers. You may work in fashion design, buying or merchandising as a fashion graduate. Big employers in the area include Next, Boohoo, and ASOS, as well as traditional companies like Marks and Spencer.

Starting salaries are usually between £18-25k for entry-level roles but this can vary depending on the employer’s budget or location.

Fashion Roles UK

What sort of graduate fashion jobs are out there to apply for? Some fashion and retail companies have graduate schemes you can sign up for, and in more specialist roles like becoming a designer you may have to gain some work experience before you apply. This is a big part of the industry.

A lot of roles have shifted to a more online, home-based role in the fashion industry, which may help you to open up your search to a wider area.

Fashion Design Graduate Jobs

Designing fashion clothes and accessories is a common job in fashion. You may work for fashion houses, fashion retailers or even fast fashion companies like Boohoo and Asos who have their own designs. Fashion designers are responsible for coming up with the initial concept of what the item should look like, sourcing materials to use, creating mood boards and liaising with fashion illustrators, pattern cutters and machinists.

Fashion Buyer Graduate Jobs

Buying fashion clothes for a retailer is another option as a fashion graduate. This could involve buying clothing, accessories and footwear from trend-led collections, or designer labels to suit the store’s target market. As a fashion buyer, you will need to be up-to-date with fashion trends, have strong commercial awareness and understand what sort of ranges sell in your store.

Fashion Merchandising Graduate Jobs

Merchandising is the process of organising and controlling the stock in a fashion business, from the initial selection of products through to delivery to customers. As a fashion merchandiser, you would need to have an understanding of the fashion industry. You’d also need an analytical approach with a keen eye for detail.

There are other roles within fashion and some incredibly interesting and niche positions for those who have gained experience and earned their stripes within other fashion businesses. Self-employment is also fairly common in this sector.

Finding a Fashion Graduate Role

You can apply directly online to fashion companies by sending them a CV, or you can find positions that are currently being advertised for a better chance of finding employment quickly.
