Actuary Internships

Actuaries play a massive role when it comes to the insurance and finance industries, and though a lot of people don’t know exactly what the role entails, it can be a fantastic career for the statistically minded. Actuary internships can be a great way to learn the trade and understand the inner workings of this job before your future career as an actuary.

What Does an Actuary Do?

An actuary is a mathematician who specializes in risk assessment and insurance. They use their understanding of statistics and probability to help companies price their products, assess risk, and advise on financial planning.

Companies that need actuaries within their ranks often include insurance companies, pension funds, and investment firms. Actuarial internships are likely to be within one of these companies.

What Will You Do in an Actuary Internship?

Most actuarial intern jobs will have you working directly with actuary professionals within the company. This means that you may be asked to do a lot of research, data analysis, and report writing.

Of course, it depends on which firm you are working for, and different insurance companies may give their actuarial interns more of a hands-on role. You may be doing a summer actuary internship or you may be working over a longer period of time.

Which Degrees Can Lead to Actuary Roles?

You should look to get a maths-based degree at a high grade such as a 2:1 or above and you can also take specific actuarial exams. There are BSc Actuarial Science undergraduate degrees too, that can provide you with an excellent option for moving into this field.

Often, if you find an actuary graduate scheme with an employer like Axa, Aviva, or other big insurers, you may find that they put you through additional postgraduate qualifications. With actuary internships, this is less likely to be the case.

Find and Apply for Actuary Internships

Before you apply to become an actuarial intern, it is a good idea to be well on the way to getting a mathematics-based degree, or even working towards actuarial qualifications. You may then contact insurance companies directly, but results may be mixed.

Our internship jobs board has many opportunities for students and graduates, including potential actuary internships to find and apply for today.
