Student Vet Nurse Jobs

A lot of people are searching for student vet nurse jobs as part of their studies, as they look to gain real experience in a veterinary nursing environment. Vets practices are currently going through a shortage and there is plenty of demand out there. Ads for student vet nurse jobs in the UK are fairly common.

Becoming a Veterinary Nurse

The Veterinary Nursing qualification is a three-year or four-year full-time course, that once completed leads to registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a Veterinary Nurse. The first year is often spent studying at college and the following two years are then spent on placement in different veterinary practices.

To qualify for the course you normally need three A-Level qualifications. However, it is possible to take an alternative route and some training centres offer a foundation degree if you don’t have any existing qualifications.

Because there is such a shortage of vet nurses, you may even get paid on your placement.

What Do Veterinary Nurses Get Paid?

Many student vet nurses don’t get paid on their student placement or work experience but some do and the pay can vary from a small amount to enough to cover your expenses to a full salary. In recent years, student vet nurses have been in high demand which makes it more likely that higher salaries will be offered.

Once qualified, starting salaries vary from around £20,000 to £28,000 depending on location. Veterinary nurse jobs can vary greatly when it comes to how much you will get paid based on a number of factors.

The Role of a Veterinary Nurse

A student vet nurse’s role is to provide nursing care for animals in a veterinary setting. This includes, but is not limited to, providing essential clinical care such as wound management and taking blood samples; maintaining patient records; preparing patients and surgical equipment for surgery; assisting with anaesthesia and post-operative care.

In addition, student vet nurses are also responsible for the welfare of the animals in their care, promoting good husbandry practices and carrying out clinical audits. The role can be very rewarding and is perfect for animal lovers.

How to Find a Placement

There are a few ways that you can find a placement as part of your course. One way is to contact veterinary practices directly and ask if they have any student vet nurse vacancies. Another way is to look on the internet or in newspapers for adverts placed by veterinary practices looking for student nurses.

You can also go through an agency, which specialises in student vet nurse placements.
