Net Zero
By 2050, the UK is legally required to have reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 100% from 1990 levels. This is no easy feat and will require a massive effort from everyone. The government’s plans to reach net zero involve the following pledges:
- generating all electricity from clean sources by 2035, including wind, solar and nuclear projects
- banning new petrol and diesel cars from 2030
- installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 to replace gas boilers
- using carbon capture to remove between 20 and 30 million tonnes of CO2 a year by 2030
The number of jobs in the low-carbon and renewable energy economy is expected to reach 694,000 by 2030. This is great news for anyone looking for sustainability jobs for graduates.
Sustainability Career Paths
We’ve outlined some common sustainability career paths for graduates to give you a better idea of what’s on offer:
Renewable Energy Engineer
Design and implement clean energy solutions using solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power. Your work will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, making a significant impact on the fight against climate change.
Sustainability Consultant
Sustainability consultants work with businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organisations to develop and implement sustainable practices. By providing expert guidance and actionable strategies, sustainability consultants help organisations integrate sustainability into their core operations. In turn, this leads to tangible environmental and social benefits.
Environmental Policy Analyst
Shape government policies and regulations to support environmental conservation and build a more sustainable society. You’ll evaluate the environmental impact of proposed policies and make evidence-based recommendations for sustainable alternatives.
Sustainable Product Designer
As a sustainable product designer, you’ll be at the forefront of developing eco-friendly and socially responsible products. By creating products that are more durable, recyclable, and resource-efficient, you’ll contribute to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.
Conservation Scientist
Conservation scientists play a vital role in preserving and restoring natural ecosystems and biodiversity. By studying the delicate balance between human activities and the environment, you’ll help mitigate the negative impacts of development. All the while, you’ll be promoting sustainable practices that protect endangered species and valuable ecological resources.
Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list so do your research to find the career path that best suits your strengths and interests
