Graduate Jobs in Sports Science

Here is our list of the best sports science graduate jobs. Needless to say, many other career options are available, so be sure to research the areas that interest you the most.

Personal Trainer

Perhaps the most common career path for sports science graduates is to become a personal trainer. Many people who study for this degree tend to enjoy going to the gym to work out. Graduating with a degree in sports science allows you to make a living sharing your knowledge of the gym with your clients. You’ll need excellent people skills and be a great motivator. You’ll create workout plans for your clients and help them to reach their fitness goals.

Personal trainers often start out working full-time in gyms. Over time, they can build up a reputation for themselves and even go out on their own. You have the option to do freelance work or perhaps open up your own gym.

Fitness Centre Manager

Once you’ve mastered the personal training side of things, the next step might be to become the manager of a fitness centre. As a fitness centre manager, you’ll be in charge of the entire business from marketing to managing staff and payroll to ensuring the business is profitable. A good knowledge of business management would be helpful so consider studying for a qualification like a higher national certificate in this area.

Career prospects for fitness centre managers are good, with lots of opportunities for internal promotions to roles including general manager or regional manager.

Sports Physiotherapist

As a sports physiotherapist, you’ll diagnose and treat sports-related injuries. Having graduated with a first or upper-second-class honours degree in sports science, you’ll be able to do a fast-track postgraduate course. It’s also possible to get into this area through an apprenticeship.

Depending on the role itself, you could be working indoors or outdoors. There are a variety of jobs available through the NHS, in therapy clinics, private hospitals, fitness centres or on sports teams.

Nutritionist

If you’re passionate about nutrition and the food we put into our bodies, then perhaps a career as a nutritionist could be for you. Your undergraduate degree in sports science will lead you to a postgraduate degree in nutrition. From there, a variety of employment options are available in both the public and private sectors, such as:

  • Food Policy Development
  • Public Health
  • The Food Industry
  • Government Campaigns
  • Research
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Weight Management
  • International Aid

Performance Analyst

Performance analysts monitor the performance of teams and their individual players in order to maximise a team’s success rate. You’ll specialise in a particular sport, using data and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to study how a team can improve. You’ll work closely with coaches and athletes in training and competitive environments in order to ensure improvements in their performance.

This is an excellent role for sports science graduates, providing the perfect combination of sports and the science behind them.
