Graduate Jobs in Criminology

Once you’ve graduated, there are a variety of roles available in both the public sector and private sector that are directly related to your degree.

Police Officer

Police officers work in partnership with communities to maintain law and order. Their responsibilities include protecting the public and their property, preventing crime, and improving the quality of life for all citizens.

In terms of career progression, there’s plenty of room to move forward. Police constables can train to become detectives, sergeants, inspectors, and chief inspectors.

Detective

Detectives are qualified police officers who work on more serious cases. These cases include the likes of robbery, domestic violence, public and child protection, fraud, cybercrime, and homicide, among others. They’re excellent problem-solvers, who thrive on challenges. Detectives are also educators who are passionate about keeping the public safe.

Similar to working as a police officer, there is a range of benefits available, such as a pension, childcare schemes, and paid sick leave.

Crime Scene Investigator

If you prefer the more scientific side of criminology, then perhaps a job as a crime scene investigator would suit you. You’ll gather forensic evidence from crime scenes which will be used to help identify criminals and later prosecute them in court.

As you can imagine, a crime scene investigator needs to be able to remain focused despite working in possibly upsetting environments. A lot of the work is done in a shift pattern where you’ll need to be available 24 hours a day to answer police calls regarding new crime scenes.

Prison Officer

Asa prison officer, you’ll be responsible for the safety, supervision, and rehabilitation of the people who are in your ‘home’ prison. It’s a job for resilient and assertive people who are good communicators. Self-confidence and personal integrity are also important traits of a good prison officer.

Your criminology degree isn’t necessary for a job as a prison officer, but it will definitely help you stand out from the crowd during the application process.
