Middlesbrough College is the largest further education provider in Teesside. 

It provides predominantly further education but also selected higher education provisions to over 13,000 students. Middlesbrough College also employs over 1,000 staff out of their £100m state of the art campus on the banks of the tees.

Whilst retaining and developing its traditional offering it has also recently been selected as the Tees Valley hub of the North East’s Institute of Technology – A new concept providing higher technical training through collaboration between further and higher education and employers. The funding secured through the Institute of Technology has been invested in extending the College’s STEM Centre, the latest expansion of the Middlesbrough College group, bringing a range of academic, technical, and vocational training opportunities to learners across the region.

Teesside is set to benefit from a number of exciting developments! To name but a few, the largely discussed Freeport and the creation of a treasury northern campus will bring revenue that will create a vast number of opportunities to the people of our region.

Key Strategic Responsibilities:

  • To work across the College to lead, manage and coordinate the student journey from school, through careers advice, enrolment, induction, support, enrichment, tutorial, progression and alumni.
  • To be responsible for the provision of excellent, professional and proactive student services which ensure that students are safe, supported, resourced and are at the heart of the College decision making and continuous improvement process.
  • To lead on all matters relating to SEN students, to lead a high quality progression studies department and to provide appropriate, timely, high quality Additional Learning Support to all students who need it.
  • To be the overall college and Ofsted lead on student personal development, behaviour and welfare and in doing so to coordinate an outstanding personal development and employability programme to enhance the character, resilience, development and employability of our learners.
  • To be the Designated Safeguarding Lead liaising with external agencies (including Ofsted) as required to ensure students are safe at all times and the College fulfils all statutory duties in this area, including training of staff, students and governors and managing a disciplinary system which ensures the College maintains a positive learning environment.
  • Through the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, to ensure the college enjoys an excellent external reputation and provides a first class admissions service for new students.
  • To actively contribute to the College’s Strategic Plan and in particular the ambition to become an outstanding provider of education and training.

Specific Responsibilities

  • To participate in strategic and operational planning and delivery as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • To deputise for the Principal/Chief Executive as appropriate.
  • To lead and advise on all policy matters relating to your area of responsibility.
  • To be the College advocate for students, being responsible for a first class experience from first contact in schools or the community, during enrolment, through their time at College, through progression and to their next destination (including higher education and employment).
  • To be the overall college lead on all matters relating to safeguarding, including developing polices, procedures, supporting students, working with agencies, training staff, students and governors and liaising with Ofsted and multi agencies as appropriate.
  • To lead on the commissioning of ‘high needs’ places and ensuring a high quality personalised support package for such students alongside managing a supportive and developmental progression studies department and a cross college additional learning support function.
  • To develop a high profile, accessible student service, delivering first class services including financial and other learner advice, managing budgets and maximising the support available.
  • To lead the college careers service achieving matrix accreditation and ensuring we meet Gatsby benchmarks
  • To lead and manage the student attendance and disciplinary processes, ensuring an appropriate balance is achieved between providing second chances for students subject to a disciplinary process whilst providing a safe and positive learning environment for their peers.
  • To ensure that the Student Voice is at the heart of all decision making and that the network of capturing the student voice remains at the forefront of national best practice.
  • To develop meaningful links with schools, parents, guardians, local authorities, careers advisory services, job centres, police, other enforcement agencies and other key stakeholders as required.
  • To work with the local authorities on matters of interest such as NEETs reduction, SEN provision, HNS commissioning and education priorities.
  • To champion an outstanding customer service both within all teams and also across the College.
  • To provide and present timely reports on areas of responsibility for the Senior Leadership Team, Governors and other appropriate bodies.
  • To ensure relevant policies and procedures are developed and adhered to including providing training and support to staff as required.
  • To ensure all statutory obligations are fulfilled.
  • To liaise with and respond to auditors and other external agencies on all relevant matters.
  • To manage and supervise staff as required including arranging appropriate training and development.
  • To act as authorised signatory and budget holder as required.
  • To participate in the College duty and Incident Manager rota as required.
  • To meet targets as set in agreement with the Principalship.
  • To ensure relevant policies and procedures are developed and adhered to including providing training and support to staff as required.
  • To be a College data owner responsible to the Data Protection Officer to ensure compliance with the College’s Data Protection Policy.
  • To show an active commitment to the College’s Equality & Diversity Policy, Quality Frameworks, Health and Safety and Welfare Policy.
  • To actively participate in Continuous Professional Development including the introduction of new technologies to allow you to contribute effectively to the success of the College.

Qualification and Training

  • To hold a relevant Safeguarding Qualification
  • Educated to degree level (and with Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent).
  • A commitment to undertake any mandatory training relevant to the role

Knowledge

  • Extensive and highly developed knowledge of Safeguarding, special educational needs and careers policy frameworks
  • Up to date knowledge of the education sector and the changing policy framework
  • A sound understanding of the importance of external and internal communications.
  • An ability to undertake action planning and review.
  • Knowledge of budgeting procedures.
  • Excellent IT Skills
  • An understanding of matrix and careers advice
  • Skill and ability to carry out market research and apply findings effectively.

Experience

  • Experience of providing comprehensive management information to senior managers.
  • Experience of dealing with complex safeguarding cases including multi agency meetings
  • Experience of managing student disciplinary and a student support service
  • Experience of budgeting and financial management.
  • Experiencing of commissioning SEN places and providing appropriate support to SEN students
  • Experience of managing careers, reception, learning resources and additional learning support
  • Experience of presenting key information to higher management and governing bodies to assist strategic decision making.
  • Experience of developing and providing training to fulfil statutory needs.
