The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity and fantastic first step to become a veterinary nurse? We are looking for a motivated and friendly individual with a strong passion for animal care and welfare to join us as a Veterinary Care Assistant. In this role you will receive full support and guidance with our in-house ‘on the job’ training program led by a qualified buddy. You will be working in all areas of the practice learning the core principles of veterinary nursing.

After 12 -18 months, you will be given the opportunity to train as a student veterinary nurse at a local Training College. The successful candidate will have plenty of hands on experience with patients including walking dogs and TLC with cats; you will be responsible for maintaining kennels and the general environment to a high clinical standard following cleaning protocols, feeding animals, animal handling and behaviour, reporting back to and assisting nurses with patient care and preparing medical equipment.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working as part of a busy team and possess the confidence to work alone when required; you will have a flexible and adaptable approach to work, happy to get stuck in where ever needed.

Full time 43 hours a week

Key Accountabilities

  • Assisting the veterinary surgeons and nursing team
  • Cleaning all areas
  • Assisting with restraining animals
  • Assisting with the preparation of daily surgical procedures
  • Assisting with nursing and care of inpatients
  • Helping to admit injured, ill or stray animals
  • Working on reception
  • Answering incoming calls, booking appointments, welcoming owners and their pets in a cheerful, helpful and professional manner, taking payments for treatment and sales of pet shop items
  • Maintaining client records, scanning and filling, receiving stock orders, cash handling and daily cashing up
  • Calling owners with information (reminders, collection of orders etc)
  • Informing owners of various offers and plans
  • Discussing preventative health care with clients, i.e. vaccinations, flea and worm treatments
  • Delivering outstanding client and patient care
  • Completing tasks assigned by the nursing and vet teams necessary for the efficient running of the practice
  • Will be required to help out at other branches – they are all close together in North London
  • Skills and Experience

    Please list your qualifications and grades on your CV, including Maths and English.

    Applicants must have 5 GCSE’s at grade C / 4 or above to include Maths, English Language and a Science and be in possession of examination certificates. 

    Alternatively, City & Guilds will accept alternative qualifications, e.g. Veterinary Care Assistant Certificate, Animal Nursing Assistant Award or National Diploma in Animal Care – you will still be required to provide proof of GCSE Maths and English and provide the original certificates.

    Outstanding customer facing skills

    Previous experience employed by a vet practice preferred

    Previous work experience within a veterinary practice is desirable (voluntary or paid) along with a willingness to learn; work experience with animals would also be beneficial.
