We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Resource Officer in the South London Coroners Office. Her Majesty’s Coroner for South London comprises the four London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon and Sutton and the Court and offices are located at Davis House.
Coroner’s inquire into violent and unnatural deaths, deaths of unknown causes, deaths which have occurred in custody or otherwise in state detention under the Coroner’s and Justice Act 2009. The coroner’s inquiries may take one of several forms and may result in the holding of an inquest. Her Majesty’s Coroners are independent judicial officers in England and Wales. They are appointed and financed by local authorities but are not employed by them. Although local authorities have some control in financial matters, they have none over coroners’ decisions.
Following a redesign of the South London Coroners Service (SLCS), the opportunity to join the team as a Resource Officer supporting the Senior Coroner in the delivery of her statutory duties has arisen. This role is employed by the Council and is responsible for ensuring that support for the South London Coroners Service is delivered effectively and in line with all statutory and regulatory requirements in consultation with the Metropolitan Police and Ministry of Justice, among others.
We are looking for a Resource Officer who will:
Answer the telephone and directing calls to the appropriate person; dealing with general inquiries in an extremely busy and pressurised environment (this demands a good knowledge of what information can be given and to whom).
Deal with bereaved families, representatives and professionals on behalf of the Coroner and his Officers; including GP’s, hospital consultants, pathologists, police, foreign office, lawyers, insurance companies, other agencies and organisations ensuring that these are dealt with accurately and in a timely fashion within the legal framework.
Arrange the allocation of sudden death referrals to Coroner’s Officers to ensure workload is fairly distributed and any difficulties are reported to the Coroner’s Service Manager in a timely fashion.
Attend to visitors, including funeral directors requesting disposal paperwork.
This role require someone with a background with the coroner’s service and who can ensure the very highest standards are achieved and maintained often in complex and challenging situations. The post holder will need to be confident and comfortable with the level of accountability that goes with this role as the South London Coroners Service is open to public scrutiny, deals with sensitive situations and members of the public who are often at their most vulnerable, you will need calmness and empathy to deal with families at a sensitive and difficult time, and the ability to handle complex sensitive data.
Although, experience of working with the public and performing a similar role in a similar environment is required, we would welcome applications from individuals who feel they can demonstrate these skill sets gained in a comparable environment.
