The Public Art Assistant (Graduate) would assist the Public Art Curator who is responsible for curating the annual Winter Lights Festival, managing the exhibition programme in the Window Galleries, devising and curating new events and supporting the management of exhibitions in the lobby of One Canada Square and across the estate.

The Public Art Assistant would play a vital role in supporting the various aspects of the department including general administration, maintaining databases, assisting with marketing and PRof daily and monthly bank reconciliations and accounting for banking transactions

About the Arts + Events department

The Canary Wharf Arts + Events department produce and facilitate a variety of public events utilising the public open spaces and indoor venues within the Canary Wharf estate. The varied programme of events ranges from music concerts, comedy nights, film seasons, outdoor festivals and dance performances to street theatre, sporting events, charity initiatives, theatre shows and art exhibitions. The majority of these events are free and open to all.

The department consists of five full-time staff and is supported by consultants, freelance project and technical staff, and event crew and stewards. 

Canary Wharf Public Art commissions and promotes a range of public art projects for Canary Wharf Group and runs a series of exhibitions throughout the year as part of the Arts + Events programme in the lobby of One Canada Square and across the estate

Main Responsibilities

  • To assist with exhibition and event administrative tasks.
  • To deal with incoming and outgoing telephone and email correspondence.
  • To assist with the Art collection inventory.
  • Organise and assist with Art exhibitions including carrying out research, curation, publicity, marketing, liaising with artists, curators, installation teams.
  • Assist with general marketing and Art map updates.
  • Coordinate the postage of information, catalogues and books to visitors, artists and clients.
  • To attend events as required which may occasionally fall on evenings and weekends.
  • Create, develop and maintain positive relationships with external and other key partner organisations and individuals.
  • Assist in booking staff / crew / security for events.
  • Assist on all departmental events, as required.
  • To provide full and effective communication and liaison with relevant internal departments of Canary Wharf Limited and Canary Wharf Management Limited, including: Public Open Spaces: Estate Management – Security, Cleaning, Infrastructure, Waste Management, Health & Safety, Landscaping; Building ManagersCWG departments – Retail Management and Retail PromotionsPublic Art: outdoor and indoor art installations and exhibitionsArts & Events: event organisation and assistance in running events
  • What We Require of You

  • The incumbent will need to be a recent graduate (graduated within the last 2 years). A graduate from an Art related background is essential.
  • A creative and logical approach to work with an ability to use own initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer literate and possess a good working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Able to work under pressure, use their initiative and have a flexible, methodical and ordered approach to their work.
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a team.
  • An appreciation of the importance of customer service and how this is applied in the context of Canary Wharf Group.
  • Empathy with the goals and values of the department and company.
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
