What does our personal tax team do?

Taxis a fact of life – it’s deducted from our wages, added to things we buy, paidby companies and rarely out of the news headlines these days. But a career intax isn’t just about numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses tomake sure tax doesn’t become an obstacle to their long-term goals.

On a day-to-day basis, our team helps individuals comply with theshifting requirements of the tax authorities and pay the right amount of tax.This includes helping private clients complete individual self-assessment taxreturns. We also provide tax advice to individuals, partnerships and trusts atevery stage of their life cycle. This includes capital gains, inheritance tax,pensions planning, exit and succession planning (maximising reliefs available),residential property tax, residence and domicile advice, leading with taxinvestigations with HMRC and advice on holding assets whether that be in a UKtrust, offshore trust or personal investment company.

What can you expect?

RSM’s graduate apprenticeship in personaltax will give you a solid foundation in a broad range of tax issues. With us,you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising directly withclients, preparing and completing tax returns for HMRC and helping more seniorcolleagues with advisory work. The variety of work we do and the range ofclients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover acareer path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our supportyou’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take onever-more challenging tasks.

AtRSM, you’ll gain hands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring andtrain towards a professional tax qualification. The study route available inthis team which will help you become a Chartered Tax Advisor is the Tax Pathwayroute, which consists of the ATT (The Association of Taxation Technicians) andthe CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) professional qualifications. We are committedto ensuring that the route through to qualification is the best for you as anindividual and maximises your potential. Alongside your technical training, youwill attend internal developmental training courses to ensure you have theprofessional and personal skills to become a trusted Chartered Tax Advisor.

Asyou come towards the end of your studies, you’ll have a deep understanding ofpersonal tax. This will be reflected in the complexity of your client portfolioand your responsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.

What we look for

Tax is a technicallydemanding discipline, so we look for graduates who are always up for achallenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. While you don’t have to be amaths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers.

At RSM, you’ll be helping a widerange of clients – from wealthy individuals to major multinationals – so it’simportant that you’re adaptable. You’ll often need to explain complex technicalinformation during client meetings and in written reports, so we’re looking forgraduates with excellent verbal and written communication skills. We also lookfor team players who enjoy interacting with others and are curious about howbusinesses work and the interaction between taxation and personal and familywealth and financial goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry requirements

At RSM, wedon’t just look for good exam results. We think passion, personality andoriginality are just as important.

You will need:

  • 112 UCAS (new tariff) across 3 A Levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification or 104 UCAS (new tariff) across 4 Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers. Please note, RSM does not accept General Studies, AS levels or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
  • A predicted or obtained honours degree.
  • UCASchanged their points system so under the old tariff it would be 280 or 260 pointsrespectively.
