Job overview

The Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Musgrove Park Hospital is seeking to recruit 2 x Trust Middle Grade Doctors to join the team as we expand the service, following our recent refurbishment in December 2020 of the unit.

We pride ourselves on delivering high quality care to approximately 22 patients each day. We are seeking inspirational doctors who are passionate about providing high quality, emergency same day care in this fast paced, evolving and exciting area of acute emergency care. You must have excellent communication skills and be enthusiastic about being part of an innovative multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time to join our same day emergency care team as we increase the numbers of patients attending the service. We see approximately 22 patients a day on each site, with varying presentations including renal colic, DVT, cellulitis, low risk chest pain and many more.

We work closely with the Emergency Department, taking many patients from ED triage, as well as those who are referred in by their own GPs. If you are interested in ambulatory and same day emergency care (SDEC) then this could be the role for you!

The SDEC team are flexible and supportive of each other, and opportunities are available for doctors to develop their skills or undertake educational projects including in developing ambulatory emergency care pathways.

There are no night shifts involved in this post, we are currently developing the unit to open 7 days a week, 14 hours a day.

We welcome applications from doctors who are already registered with the GMC and who have at least 6 months experience working in the NHS.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You would join our established Acute Medicine team which covers all medical admissions through the 51 bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and the designated same day emergency care (SDEC) area.

You would primarily be responsible for patients attending for assessment in the SDEC or AMU on a rotating basis, supporting the CMT/GPVTS trainee and PA/ANP in patient management and follow up with the support of the Acute Medicine Consultants (who rotate between areas).

There will also be opportunities to lead changes in practice and developments on the SDEC and to be involved on the AMU. SDEC is open 08.00 to 20.00, but the post holders will be on a rota, which ultimately would consist of working a rota covering the unit from 08:00 -22:00 weekdays and 09:00 -21:00 at weekends. There are zero-hour days factored into the rota and flexibility regarding the timing of SPA and administration time. Our aim is to make these posts enjoyable and enable them to flex around other commitments, while meeting the growing needs of our patients.

Any member of the junior medical staff may be required to serve as member of a medical committee if so elected by his/her colleagues.

Involvement in audit and Q.I. and departmental development is also encouraged, with full help from the department.
