What does our InnovationReliefs team do?

Innovation Reliefs isa national team who support companies in making the most from the UKGovernment’s R&D funding incentives. We are a core and integrated part ofthe wider Corporate Tax department at RSM. But a career in tax isn’t justabout numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses to reallyunderstand what they want to achieve, making sure tax doesn’t become anobstacle to their long-term goals and helping them support their businesses tosucceed and grow.

We advise companiesof all sizes and from all sectors of business, helping them comply with thecomplex UK tax regime and also, in many cases, the tax regime of severaloverseas territories.

A key part of thisrole is that you will be part of our specialist Innovation Reliefs team which assistscompanies in the preparation of claims for Research & Development taxrelief. This specialism is an important part of our tax practice returningdouble digit growth each year. We work with companies across all sectors, mostnotably manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, software and digitaltechnologies. We wish to attract graduates with a degree across science,engineering, technology or information technology (IT), e.g. computer science,to help in this area whilst having access to wider tax experience andqualifications.

Alongside InnovationReliefs you will have the opportunity to get involved with compliance work toallow you to get to know your clients’ businesses well, and therefore we willexpect you to spot opportunities for them to benefit from tax incentives or toavoid potentially costly pitfalls. Tax compliance and tax planning are animportant part of all major corporate strategy and RSM can help them get thisright.

Withus, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising withclients to preparing and completing corporation tax returns.

At RSM, you’ll gainhands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring and build on yourscience or technology background to train towards a professional taxqualification. You will get the opportunity to work with our client’s technicalexperts, CTOs and chief engineers who are at the top of their field, and youwill not be constrained to work in a narrow discipline. When you join thisteam, you will work towards the CTA qualification through the Joint Programmeroute (ACA/CTA) . We are committed to ensuring that the route through toqualification is the best for you as an individual and maximises yourpotential. Alongside your technical training, you will attend internaldevelopmental training courses to ensure you have the professional and personalskills to become a trusted Chartered Tax Advisor. As you come towards the endof your studies, you’ll have a deep understanding of corporate tax. This willbe reflected in the complexity of your client portfolio and yourresponsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.

You’ll often need toexplain complex technical information during client meetings and in writtenreports, so we’re looking for graduates with excellent verbal and writtencommunication skills. Minimum Qualifications

Entry requirements

At RSM, we don’t justlook for good exam results. We think passion, personality and originality arejust as important.

You will need:

  • 112 UCAS (new tariff) across 3 A Levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification or 104 UCAS (new tariff) across 4 Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers. Please note, RSM does not accept General Studies, AS levels or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ);
  • An predicted or obtained honours degree from a science, engineering, technology or information technology (IT) background, e.g. computer science.
  • UCAS changed theirpoints system so under the old tariff it would be 280 or 260 pointsrespectively.
