Graduate Research Analyst | Sports, Gaming & Media Practice 

The Sports, Gaming and Media practice sits at the heart of the Odgers Berndtson organisation working with some of the most high-profile clients across the three sub-sectors. Over the past 10 years, the SGM practice has remained one of the highest-grossing practices across the Odgers group. The practice operates internationally working collaboratively with colleagues dotted around many of our offices worldwide. 

The practice works on a broad range of appointments from specific industry-only hires in sports, gaming, and media as well as classic C-level commercial, operational and functional hires. An increasing number of searches are focusing on Independent Non-Executive Directors and Chairs. Many of our assignments require research into international talent pools and the need to identify talent from outside of our industries. 

The sports side of the practice is well established and the market leader for senior-level executive and board appointments in global sport across teams, leagues, sponsors, major sports events, agencies, and sports bodies.

The practice recently incorporated media and this continues to be a growth area for the practice; clients include traditional broadcasters and all content creators, producers and distributors across multi-media platforms and a range of agencies. The functional areas of Communications and Corporate Affairs also comes under the umbrella of sports, gaming, and media.

The Gaming sub-practice was set up initially in 2012 to focus on senior-level appointments in online gambling and now holds a market-leading position in this niche in Europe with expansion plans into the US. Three years ago, the gaming team diversified into the parallel industry of interactive entertainment and now works with a growing list of clients in video gaming, mobile/free-to-play/social gaming and the exciting space of esports. 

Odgers Berndtson continues to be unique in being the only global search firm with a dedicated sports, gaming and media practice focusing on senior appointments. There are very clear overlaps and advantages to having a presence across these three sub-sectors. This new role will work across the entire practice, supporting searches in all sub-sectors and at all levels of seniority. 

The Role

Research is critical to what we do. The core role of our Researchers is to identify and assess candidates for the high-profile executive, non-executive & board appointments we work on, for our clients. You will be supported with training and development to succeed. 

As the breadth of our appointments become increasingly global, across multiple territories and markets, the demand for exceptional, diverse talent, and rigour in our processes, increases. As such, we need to be more creative and agile in our approach to where, and how, we source talent.

The scope of this role will be:

  • At least 50-60% of your time will involve creating new routes to access and identify talent for specific assignments, proactively sourcing in new sectors and geographical locations, to be able to supplement our live searches as well as talent pipelining for our future growth or specific skill sets.
  • The rest of the time will be spent on a variety of projects such as researching new markets for potential business development, identifying and presenting to the team on industry trends as well as statistical analysis of current and previous appointments
  • Additionally, the role will allow our existing researcher and associates to become more proactive in their development, allowing space for future development and growth of this position as the practice expands.

    The ideal candidate will have a broad view of the world and be interested in sports, media, gaming, consumer technology, entertainment, and the e-commerce sector as these areas largely make up the target market for sourcing candidates for our assignments.

    The person will need to be creative in their strategies, be curious and ideas focused and able to devise ‘out of the box’ solutions. On the flip side, they will need to combine this with a methodical approach, analytical mindset and practical delivery.

    Being a self-starter is critical, we are a collaborative yet independent team so you will need to manage your time and your workload and ultimately, be results-driven.

    Your time will be mainly spent working independently but also collaborating with colleagues in the practice and with the Odgers network internationally.

    Candidate Generation & Attraction

  • Identify appropriate target firms and construct the search strategy to be undertaken.
  • Utilising all existing internal and public databases and social platforms, combined with targeted sourcing calls to generate suitable candidates and market intelligence for each assignment. Continually expanding, updating, and improving the existing candidate pool.
  • Assess and qualify candidates with the right skills and ensure cultural fit.
  • Providing feedback and rationale on market intelligence and candidate potential.
  • Heading Assignment Support

  • Where appropriate, attending client briefings and contributing to early business development activity and search strategy.
  • Assist with preparation of client progress reports.
  • Adhere to best practice, ensuring all required candidate information is kept accurate and compliant with GDPR regulations.
