Want to join one of the most progressive and exciting tech businesses in the North East?
tombola is a family-owned technology company operating in the online gambling market. We came bouncing into the online bingo world in 2006, but we’ve actually been printing bingo tickets since your parents were playing on their Commodore 64s… in fact even longer than that! We’ve grown rapidly over the years and entered the world of online slots in 2016 with tombola arcade. Although we’ve grown our HQ remains where everything started on the riverbanks of sunny Sunderland.
Our unique approach to both bingo and arcade means we do things differently to the majority of our competitors and we have a strong stance on responsible gambling that we’re really proud of. Protecting our players and putting them at the heart of everything we do is key to our ongoing success. We optimise value for money, player retention and the potential for harm by having strong responsible measures in place. We go above and beyond what is required by legislation and this includes us having a dedicated and specially trained ‘Safeplay’ team who are committed to making responsible play the norm.
What’s it like to work at tombola?
Strap yourself in and hold on tight as we take you on a tour of what it’s like to work at tombola…
Our people are encouraged to be their authentic selves at work and we’re super proud of having a diverse workforce here at tombola. We care about diversity and we’re really trying to do everything we can to improve in this area. We understand that the world of tech can be male-dominated and we think it’s important to even things out. So, when you join tombola you will have the option to join a Women Support Network which is inclusive of they/them and she/her, they’ll be able to offer you tons of support and advice.
As a developer/engineer in tombola you’ll be part of a large, diverse community of peers with a full range of experience. We have a unique culture that values personal growth and progression. We provide our engineers with everything they need to develop and progress as technologists. Whether that’s working with our partners (like AWS) to provide job specific training, attending conferences, providing books or setting up the opportunity for mentorship with some of our experienced leaders. As a graduate you will be given a support network of mentors from around the business (not just engineers) to help you learn and understand our processes and dynamics. If you need to update your address or ask the all-important questions like “What time are the bacon butties served in the café?” – your support network will point you in the right direction (the answer’s around 9am in case you were wondering).
Don’t worry it’s not all work and no play as we love a good old knees up and there’s lots of opportunities for socialising with the rest of the tombola team such as board game nights, virtual poker nights, or food and a few fizzy pops at the local bowling alley.
About the role
We always put our players first and everything we do revolves around them, it’s actually one of our core three values, along with ‘do the right thing’ and ‘innovate’. We aim to provide the safest and most engaging platform we can for our huge community, and you’ll be working on helping us to provide this market-leading player experience, which is above all FUN!
Our development/engineering teams:
We live and breathe games and design and develop them all in house. Being a part of game development you will have the opportunity to learn how to build new and exciting games. If you like the sound of working closely with developers, animators and designers to bring to life the latest innovations in our games using things like TypeScript, Pixie and you want to learn how to build the most polished of UI/UX then this is the place for you.
Game Engine Development
If maths and statistics really floats your boat then our Game Engine Development team may just be the place for you. Here you will learn how we build our game servers, building high throughput distributed systems that manage our odds-based games using things like C# and AWS.
If you’re interested in learning all about the platforms the games are built on Platform Development could be suited to you. Distributed web and cloud solutions are built using things like Nodejs, C# .Net and AWS (and lots of other stuff).
Being part of our DevOps Engineering teams will teach you how to build and maintain the significant distributed cloud and data services that all of tombola is built on. If you’re interested in cloud technology, like AWS, and orchestrating fleets of servers and services then this is the place for you.
What we are looking for from our people:
If you are a recent graduate and any of the above sounds interesting, then that’s a great start. All we then ask is you have the drive and passion to shape a future career at tombola – we can help you with everything else!
Some other things we look for:
- Good communication. We’re not expecting you to be super extrovert but being able to express your ideas clearly, talk to non-technical colleagues and give effective feedback during code reviews is really important.?
- A desire to learn. We’re unique in our approach to things, so there is a lot to learn. We like people in our team who always want to improve themselves. ?
- Suggest improvements. We’re constantly looking to improve the way we do things. From managing our workloads, to the way we deliver code. We’re always open to new ideas, if there’s something we do that you think we can do better – tell us!
- Help us help our players. Giving our players the best possible experience and value for money is ultimately what tombola is about. We pride ourselves on delivering quality software solutions and we’d love you to help us shape that.
We know that having a happy team is key to creating the feel-good factor that helps us be the best we can be as a business so we offer a competitive range of benefits:
On top of some of the usual stuff like quarterly bonus, pension and private medical care, we also give our office-based staff the flexibility to work for up to 2 days from home, as well as their own dedicated desk which is theirs if they are in the office or not. This is alongside flexible hours for an even better work-life balance. And perhaps our most popular perk is our on-site café with free breakfast and lunch expertly crafted by our amazing chefs, and with not one soggy sarnie in site…did we mention the “proper coffee” available daily too.
