HR stands for Human Resources and refers to the department of an organisation that manages and supports employees’ administrative needs. It encompasses a wide range of skills and is an essential element to all businesses. Graduate jobs in HR are very popular and often form part of management or recruitment graduate schemes.

A simple way to understand Human Resources’ job is to see them as a resource for humans in the company. They oversee the staff of a company through their entire ‘life cycle’ in that role. HR manages recruitment and hiring, firing, redundancy, contracts, pay, disputes and disciplinarians, employee records and their training. Furthermore, they are responsible for employment law and compliance with legal regulations. Contrary to popular stereotypes, HR is a dedicated support system for employees and should act as an advocate for all staff member’s rights.

HR is an excellent career path for graduates from a variety of degree backgrounds. Many graduate jobs in HR and graduate programmes in HR don’t require a specific degree subject. Instead, they value your skills, temperament, and experience. However, some universities offer Human Resources degrees, which equip you with the particular skills and knowledge for an HR role. Universities including The University of Edinburgh, the University of Plymouth, De Monfort University, the University of Bradford, and the University of Greenwich all offer this course.
